This will not be a violation of EU sanctions, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó
Hungary is ready to pay for Russian gas in rubles, this will not be a violation of EU sanctions. This was stated on Monday by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, talking to reporters during a break in the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
As for payment in rubles, we have a solution that will allow us not to violate any sanctions, but at the same time ensure gas supplies to Hungary”
said Szijjártó, who posted a video of his speech to the press on his Facebook page.
The minister explained that this issue had been discussed in recent days at technical talks between the Hungarian company CEEnergy (a subsidiary of the MVM energy group) and the Russian company Gazpromexport (a subsidiary of Gazprom). The agreement, previously signed by them, allows for a change in the currency of payment for Russian gas supplies. According to Szijjártó, the payment will be made in euros to the account of the Hungarian company in Gazprombank and converted into rubles.
Szijjártó confirmed that the Hungarian government is still opposed to the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil and gas supplies, as they play an extremely important role for the economy of his country.
In September last year, Hungary signed two long-term contracts with Gazprom, which provide for the supply of a total of 4.5 billion cubic meters of fuel per year through pipelines through Serbia and Austria, bypassing Ukraine. The agreement is designed for 15 years and can be reviewed 10 years after the start of implementation.
